Moist Heating Pads For Back Pain ReliefTop 3 Moist Heating Pads For Back Pain Relief

Heat therapy is an inexpensive and effective way of relieving aches and pains throughout the body.  Heat relaxes strained muscles and promotes blood flow to circulate around the affected areas, providing much needed pain relief.(1.)

Heating pads are a great way to transfer heat deep into areas of pain and are recommended by doctors for back pain, arthritis,  rheumatic pain, inflammation of joints and muscle spasms.  In this article I will be looking at the best moist heating pads for back pain relief.

How does a moist heating pad relieve back pain

Moist heating pads use heat and moisture to deeply penetrate the body’s tissue.  The moisture is normally drawn from the air and into the pad, which makes for better transmission of heat from the pad to the skin.  The heat can be increased or decreased to the comfort of the recipient, giving a relaxing, soothing therapeutic session to their muscles.

My No.1 Pick  Moist Heating Pad For  Back Pain –

The main reason why I chose the Theratherm Moist Heating Pad as my No.1 pick compared to its nearest competitors is because of its on/off switch.

Many other moist heating pads (including my next review, Thermophore) do not have an on/off switch, meaning the user must manually keep the ‘on’ switch pressed on if they want the pad to stay heated.  I am sure this is a safety mechanism to prevent burns in case the user falls asleep, however, when I have a heating pad on my muscles and I want to relax….well then I don’t want to continuously hold my finger on a switch to keep the pad hot.

There is a safety mechanism on this pad as well, therefore, if I did fall asleep it wouldn’t burn me.  The safety mechanism is a timer that the user can set for a certain period of time.  Set the timer for 30 minutes and then after 30 minutes the heat will turn itself off.

The pad is large enough to cover most of your back at 14″ x 27″.  You can set the temperature numerically to your desired temperature, however it must be reset every 30 minutes.  This is not a problem though as a 30 minute session is usually long enough to relax and sooth the muscles.  The pad heats up quite quickly and the temperature is very easy to control.  I would recommend the Theratherm Moist Heating Pad as a very effective way of relaxing and soothing deep, stubborn back pain.

Pros –

  • Large
  • Simple to use
  • Has an on and off switch (no need to keep it pressed)
  • Has a auto shut off timer
  • Heats up all of the pad
  • Nice heavy feel to the pad

Cons –

  • Can heat up faster than the temperature gauge displays, therefore, caution should be taken when heating the pad up quickly

Back Pain Relief With Moist Heating PadThermophore Automatic Moist Heat Pack (14″ x 27″)

The Thermophore Moist Heating Pad is a great heating pad for total back heat therapy.  The moist heating pad draws moisture from the air and provides moist heat for up to 30 minutes at a time.

This heating pad is certainly as good as any other pad available but as I said in the previous post, a major negative for me is that a person must hold down a button to keep the heat on.  I believe this is an old style of using heating pads and I would prefer to set a timer to auto shut off.  This way I can just relax and fall asleep if I want to and still have the heat therapy working away on my sore muscles.

Instead of reaching a numerical temperature, the Thermophore is controlled by feel.  The user presses the button to heat the pad up and when it reaches their desired heat, they release the button, then the temperature slowly cools down.  When the user wants to heat the pad up again they simply press the button until they reach their desired heat once more.

I prefer to relax with heat therapy so this is a no for me, however if you like to be fully in control of the temperature as you receive the heat therapy then I highly recommend the Thermophere Moist Heating Pad for effective back pain relief.

Pros –

  • Large
  • Simple to control
  • Safe
  • Good heating temperature

Cons –

  • Switch must be held down to keep on
  • No timer

Best Value Moist Heating Pad To Relieve Back Pain –

Heating Pad For Back PainSunbeam 764-511 King Size Moist/Dry Heating Pad –

The Sunbeam Moist Heating Pad is a great value heating pad that ticks a lot of boxes.  The pad is big enough at 12″ x 24″ to cover large areas of the body.  It is simple to use with 4 different settings of warm, low, medium and high and also has an easy to use slide controller which is great for arthritic sufferers.

I really like the fact that it can stay on for longer than the usual 30 minutes.  It also has a nice safety feature of automatically shutting off after 2 hours , which in my opinion is plenty time to get a good heat therapy session.

One negative I have with this heating pad is the “Moist” part of it.  The moist part is effectively a sponge that you place inside the pad.  The sponge is also smaller than the heating pad itself, therefore, will only give moist heat to a section of the pad and because of this reason, I imagine most people use it as a dry heating pad.

However, if this will not be a problem for you then the Sunbeam Moist/Dry Heating Pad is a great value option to get heat therapy to your aches and pains.

Pros –

  • Large enough
  • 4 heat settings
  • 2 hour safety auto shut off
  • No need to keep the button manually switched on
  • Comes with machine washable cover
  • Easy to use slide controller (good for arthritic hands)
  • Great value option

Cons –

  • Moist sponge is basic and uninspiring

Using moist heating pads for deep heat therapy is a great option for relaxing and soothing aching back muscles.  The moist heating pads use moisture as a way to transfer heat effectively from the pad to deep inside muscle tissue.  The heat not only relaxes the muscles but also allows blood to circulate around the painful area.  The increased blood flow to the area is a great way to not only sooth the area but also quicken recovery.
