Which type of mattress topper is best for back and hip pain
One of the most effective remedies in alleviating back and hip pain is to have a comfortable yet supportive mattress topper. Too firm and it will feel like you are sleeping on hardwood floor, too soft and you will sink into the mattress topper, placing your spine out of its proper alignment. I believe the best mattress topper materials to give this added support are memory foam or latex. These materials provide the best comfort and support combination and it is no wonder they are the most popular mattress toppers today.
What should you look for in a mattress topper to relieve back and hip pain
The two main characteristics you should pay attention to when buying a mattress topper are the thickness and the density. The thickness is important when you want the added comfort it will bring to your current bed. Generally a thicker mattress topper will benefit: people that weigh more; that have an older bed and want to make it feel like new; and also side sleepers that need some extra cushion.
The more density the mattress topper has, the more support it should provide. Higher density mattress toppers are better quality and provide the extra support to your body, helping to keep it in the correct alignment.
The Best Mattress Toppers For Back And Neck Pain Relief
My No.1 Pick – Best Mattress Topper For Back And Neck Pain –
Night Therapy 4″ Memory Foam Pressure Relief Mattress Topper
The Night Therapy memory foam mattress topper is my No.1 pick because of the comfort and support it provides. I really like how the mattress is made up of three layers, each providing its own benefit.
The base layer is made of comfort foam which relieves pressure points, great for people that find it hard to sleep with back and hip pain. The mid layer is made of memory foam, designed to conform to the shape of your body and give added support. The top layer is fiber quilted to add that extra bit of comfort.
I was also impressed with the Night Therapy memory foam which is made with the latest materials including BioFoam, green tea extract and charcoal. These materials will help keep your mattress fresh, odor free and prevent moisture accumulation. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified and the mattress topper comes with a 5 year limited warranty.
I really like this mattress topper because it gives the support needed for back and hip pain but is also very comfortable. A review on amazon caught my eye from a lady suffering from back and hip pain (bursitis). She said she has been sleeping pain free since using this mattress topper.
I also like the fact that Night Therapy are using materials to reduce the chemical smell of memory foam mattress toppers and also trying to reduce the accumulation of moisture.
Therefore, I recommend the ‘Night Therapy 4″ memory foam pressure relief mattress topper’ as the best mattress topper for bad back and hips.
Pros –
- Supporting and comfortable
- Suitable for back and hip pain sufferers
- Thick enough for heavier people
- CertiPUR-US certified
- 5 year limited warranty
- BioFoam material to reduce odor and eliminate moisture
Cons –
- May have a little odor for first few days
- Memory foam and latex have a tendency to trap heat

Best Latex Mattress Topper For Sore Back And Hips –
Ultimate Dreams 3″ Talalay Latex Mattress Topper
I am recommending the Ultimate Dreams latex mattress topper because it provides a wonderful balance of comfort, support and durability. I like that their is a choice of soft, medium or firm mattress toppers to choose from, however, as this article is written for those experiencing back and hip pain, I would recommend the medium mattress topper to be the most suitable for support and comfort.
Talalay latex is four times more breathable than memory foam. Another positive for me is that it is also very sturdy and durable, therefore, will not bunch, flatten or sag. This mattress topper is made by DreamFoam Bedding in the USA. It is encased in a natural bamboo fabric and is hypoallergenic.
The ‘Ultimate Dreams 3″ Talalay Latex mattress topper’ is a solid choice for comfort, support and durability. Although this mattress topper is quite expensive, it should last longer than memory foam mattress toppers because of the durability of latex.
Pros –
- Balance of comfort, support and durability
- Comes in a choice of soft, medium or firm mattress toppers
- Breathable
- Hypoallergenic
- Comes with a bamboo fabric case
- Will not bunch, flatten or sag
- Made in the USA
Cons –
- More expensive than the average mattress topper, however, should last a longer time

Best Value Mattress Topper To Relieve Back And Hip Pain –
Best Price Mattress 4″ Memory Foam Mattress Topper
The reason I am recommending the Best Price Mattress 4″ memory foam mattress topper is not only because of its great value but also because it provides great support and comfort.
What I love about memory foam mattress toppers are that they adapt to the temperature of a person’s body heat. This means that at first they may be quite firm but when lied upon body heat will make the memory foam conform and mold to the shape of your body.
The great thing about this is as your body molds into the mattress topper, your weight will be distributed evenly which will relieve pressure points. I believe this will be great for those with back and hip pain as there will be no pressure directed at these areas meaning you won’t be waking up during the night to change position due to pain. The mattress topper has a 2.5″ high density base to provide stability, while a 1.5″ memory foam top provides all the comfort.
I also really like how the foam isolates motion, which means a sleeping partner will not be disturbed by your movements. The mattress topper comes with a polyester mesh zipper cover and also comes with a 5 year warranty so you can rest assured that this mattress topper should be quite durable.
The Best Price Mattress topper is an affordable option that has the same layered foam style as a regular foam mattress. The high density foam in the base should prevent sags and kinks, where as the memory foam on top will provide enough support and comfort for you to have a great night’s sleep.
I highly recommend the Best Price Mattress 4″ memory foam mattress topper as a great value mattress topper that will provide enough support to relieve pressure points for bad back and hips.
Pros –
- Affordable
- High density foam and memory foam for support and comfort
- Molds to body shape, relieving pressure points
- Comes with polyester mesh zipper cover
- Isolates motion transfer, therefore, won’t disturb sleeping partner with movement
- 5 year warranty
Cons –
- May have slight odor for the first few days when unpacked

My No.1 Recommendation for Back and Hip Pain Relief

Mattress toppers can be a great way to firm up or soften up an existing mattress. They can also be a great way of making an older mattress feel like a brand new one.

Great review and information that describes the reasons for getting a foam mattress topper.
we currently use a topper but it is starting to show its age and we are looking around to see what improvements and choices are available since we purchased our mattress topper.
I can see from your post that there have been many upgrades and many new choices.
I like the idea of having a multi-layer to provide different support levels.
One thing of concern is the odor you noted for the The Best Price Mattress 4″ memory foam mattress topper when it is new. Can you give a better description of what type of odor we would encounter? What can we do to avoid having that odor or a way to control it?
Appreciate any advice you can provide
Cheers
Paul
Hi Paul, thank you for stopping by.
yes I agree that mattress toppers are definitely upgrading in terms of comfort and choice. I wouldn’t worry too much about the odor. It is a slight rubber smell that is common with all memory foam products. The reason there is an odor in the beginning is because the mattress topper has been rolled up in to a compact shape and then sealed in a box. This will trap the odor inside the box. Once the box is opened and the mattress topper is unrolled, then the odor is released. The odor may last for as little as a couple of hours to a couple of days.
If you want to speed up the odor elimination, then open some windows in the room to allow fresh air to circulate the room and mattress topper. Once again, I wouldn’t worry about this odor as it won’t last and shouldn’t be a deal breaker in purchasing mattress toppers.
I hope this helps ?
This was a great read. I’ve suffered from back pain for many years and even had surgery on a spine disc. This site is full of those back pain relief comforts.
I see that you said thickness and density are key characteristics to look out for – do you also recommend that the sleeping product should be more firm than soft?
Hey there! It is not as simple as recommending a more firm or soft mattress topper every person. It can depend on many variables, including the preference of the person sleeping on it. Also, it can depend on the weight of the person. A firm mattress topper will feel a lot more firm to a light person compared to a very heavy person. A heavy person will not feel the firmness as much.
In general, experts recommend that a medium firm mattress or mattress topper is best for the majority of people. In fact, studies have shown that medium firm provided the best night’s sleep for the participants in the study.
So to answer your question. I would go for a medium firm mattress topper if I was to buy one online. It is he safest option.
Great review on the mattress toppers man!
This could not have come at a better time. For the past week and a half I have had some serious neck pain from pulling a muscle while lifting at the gym. It isn’t helping that I’m currently sleeping on an uncomfortable cot either! This could seriously help me. The cot is not sufficient as far as comfortability is concerned. Thank you for the post. It was very informative and is something I could use to help me with my recent neck problems!
My pleasure! If your bed isn’t that old and you don’t want to replace it, then a mattress topper would be a perfect solution. I’m sure that it was a strain from a workout that is causing the neck pain, however good rest is essential to a quick recovery. Now, if you cannot sleep well in your bed, then you are not allowing your body to recover fully. A mattress topper could be just what you need for a more comfortable night’s sleep. Orthopedic pillows are not only comfortable but great for keeping your neck and spine in alignment while sleeping.
Me and my wife both have bad backs and have been buying toppers from Walmart because we don’t have a lot of money. I didn’t know there were better ones out there, at a cheaper price. We don’t have the money to spend on a new mattress, so this looks like a better alternative. Thank you for your review, it was quite informative.
Hey, thank you for leaving a comment. There are certainly some great bargains online when it comes to mattress toppers and there are a variety of them out there. Mattress toppers are a great alternative to buying a new mattress, especially for those that can’t afford a new mattress. I am a big fan of mattress toppers and they can be a great help for you and your wife’s back pain 🙂
Hello,
I generally have a problem of lower back pain. I thought sleeping on the floor would reduce it, but it never helped. While searching measures to cure lower back pain, I found your article. It was really helpful. I could realize that one of the reasons for my back pain would be usage of wrong mattress. I have bought this new mattress and fortunately my back problem has reduced to level that I can move around and sleep relaxed at night. Thank you for the help!
Thank you
Janna
Hello. Thank you for your review of the Night Therapy 4 inch memory foam mattress topper! I am 5’5″, 220 pounds and sleep on my side. I am experiencing hip pain, mostly, and some low back pain. Do you think the Night Therapy 4 inch mattress topper is a good choice for me or do you have others you would recommend instead? Thanks so much!
Hello there and thank you for leaving a comment. As you are experiencing hip pain when you sleep, a pressure point relieving mattress topper will benefit you. The Night Therapy 4″ memory foam mattress topper not only has 2.5″ of memory foam but also has 1.5″ of pressure relieving comfort foam. This combination will be ideal for not only providing support but also providing that extra cushion to the lower back and hip pain you are experiencing. If you follow the link in the review above, you can read some of the amazon customer reviews. The majority are very positive and people experiencing arthritis, shoulder, back and hip pain have had very positive experiences sleeping on this mattress topper. Hope this helps 🙂
Hi Robert,
Reading your post triggered me that it is time to do something about my bed as I have been waking up with back pain lately. Perhaps mattress topper will help alleviate my back pain. I am looking at latex material because based on experience it does last longer as you’ve mentioned in your review.
Thanks for the information in this review.
